On March 4, Jagdeep Dhankar, the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, accepted the resignation of JP Nadda, the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
In the Parliament’s Upper House, Nadda represented the state of Himachal Pradesh. As a result of his departure, the position is now empty as of March 4.
The Rajya Sabha news release announced that Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, an elected Member of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) representing Himachal Pradesh, has resigned, effective immediately. The Chairman of the Rajya Sabha has accepted his resignation. 4th March, 2024.”
Last month in February, JP Nadda, one of the 57 Rajya Sabha members whose terms were expiring in April, won election to the upper house from Gujarat without encountering any opposition. He will now remain a Gujarati member of the Rajya Sabha.
In the recent Rajya Sabha elections preceding the 2024 Lok Sabha elections polls, Jagat Prakash Nadda was among 41 candidates who won uncontested seats.
The Gujarat party, which sent four BJP candidates to the upper chamber, chose Nadda as their candidate.
His tenure as BJP president has been extended till June in the meantime.
Prior to taking office as the BJP’s national president on January 20, 2020, Nadda held the position of Union Health Minister from 2014 to 2019.
BJP secured the sole Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal Pradesh in the just ended Rajya Sabha elections, even though Congress currently governs the state.
Harsh Mahajan of the BJP won the Rajya Sabha seat by a lottery after a tie with Abhishek Manu Singhvi of the Congress, each receiving 34 votes.
Even though the BJP only has 25 MLAs in the mountainous state, cross-voting has helped them.
